Celebrity Verses Poetry: Elegy for Joan Rivers

Celebrity Verses Poetry: Elegy for Joan Rivers

Joan

Oh, Joan
our plastic Queen
fuckless snarkist

she who denied not
her creature comforts
a Liza Minnelli big bird

all feather boas and furs
all rhinestone and stretch,
telling abortion jokes

before abortion
when it was just a
“trip to Mexico”

and women couldn’t talk
but she did.
And yes her face

she owned it
shaped it
made it a creature

a thing outside of her
some kind of muppet
living self-ventriloquist.

Rest easy, young fashion
mistakes, for we all know
her ghost’s haunting

every badly hemmed,
ill-fitting, garish printed
basic bitch debut.
