The Weeknd and Portishead Have Disagreed (Over The Weeknd’s “You Belong to the World”)

Stereogum has dutifully reported on all the back and forth between Geoff Barrows of Portishead and Abel Tesfaye, aka The Weeknd. While Portishead is one of my favorite all time bands, I do think the stink going on over this sample is pretty ridiculous. I’m a big fan of The Weeknd and appreciate his use of samplings.

In today’s internet world, you’re expanding your sound by letting other’s use pieces of your work, no matter how much you think it belongs to you (Barrows keeps stating “it’s not about money”). You’re likely to gain new fans, create conversation, and possibly elevate your own artistic endeavors in the process. Writers do that shit all the time (steal), so what’s the big deal?

Anyway, here’s The Weeknd’s “Belong To The World”… and just for comparison/fun, below is Portishead’s “Machine Gun” (set to Tetsuo: The Iron Man)
